About Kath Baggaley

Garden Designer and Occupational Therapist

I am a garden designer based in the south east of Melbourne where I work from my studio overlooking my garden with Pekoe the wonder dog curled up at my feet. I love gardens and I have been designing them all my life. From the tiny plot outside my cubby house as a child to bespoke suburban, urban and community gardens.

I bring together a unique garden design and occupational therapy skill set to create gardens which combine beauty with sustainability and are tailored to meet the needs of all users.

I have a passion for plants and an extensive knowledge of both native and exotic species, their growing requirements and their uses in design. I have a Graduate Certificate in Garden Design from Melbourne University (Burnley) with First Class Honours in all subjects. As an occupational therapist with over 25 years’ experience I also have the skills to maximise the therapeutic benefits and ease of access in my gardens to benefit everyone. I firmly believe everyone should have the opportunity that the right garden can bring to nurture and enrich their life.

I am also an experienced project manager. My comprehensive end to end service includes a detailed assessment of client needs, site analysis, design work including a full set of project drawings, assistance with selection of contractors, monitoring construction and planting and maintenance advice. This ensures the final product is of the highest quality, meets the brief and lasts.

You may be wondering if I only create gardens for people who have mobility or other challenges. Not at all – I create gardens for everyone.

Another question may be whether I have a particular design style. My preference is to allow the site and the needs of my clients to direct me rather than come with a preconceived approach. The challenge of creating something unique every time is one of the things I most enjoy about designing gardens. You won’t get an off the shelf garden if you come to me – you will get a garden that meets your needs and suits your taste.

So - you want a garden – and who wouldn’t! Please go ahead and get in touch.

Creativity

Garden design is a creative problem solving process which fuses the client’s needs and desires with the dictates of the individual site – I believe every garden must be a unique solution.

Sustainability

Australia is an ancient land – I respect the individual value of every site by choosing renewable materials, restoring the health of degraded soils, enhancing biodiversity (of plants and wildlife) and producing gardens which will mature gracefully and last.

Listening

I actively listen to clients and take the time to develop a deep understanding of their needs and desires for a garden – in this way I create gardens which not only meet the brief – they enhance the lives of my clients.
